About MCA. Brief history
(1952-1999)
The political changes appeared after 1949 led to changes in the field of archaeology in Romania. One of these changes was the plan of archaeological research, which supposed enlarging the scale of archaeological researches at the Romania wide territory and also the presence of some favourite themes of research. In this period in 1952 was issued the first number from Materiale și cercetări arheologice privind istoria veche a R.P.R. (Materials and Archaeological Researches regarding the ancient history of the Popular Republic of Romania), journal of the Institute of Archaeology from the Academy of Social and Political Sciences. Starting from the second number, the title changed into Materiale și Cercetări Arheologice (Materials and Archaeological Researches). Between 1952-1973 were published 10 volumes as follows: I/1953, 815 p.; II/1956, 716 p.; III/1957, 312 p.; IV/1957, 376 p.; V/1958, 794 p.; VI/1959, 983 p.; VII/1961, 680 p.; VIII/1962, 802 p.; IX/1970, 532 p.; X/1973, 366, p.
In the editorial staff were great names of Romanian archaeology: Emil Condurachi (director), Vladimir Dumitrescu (main editor), Ion Nestor, Gheorghe Ștefan, Dumitru Berciu, Bucur Mitrea, C.S. Nicolăescu-Plopșor, Mircea Petrescu-Dâmbovița, D.M. Pippidi, Dorin Popescu, Radu Vulpe, Eugen Comșa, Maria Comșa, Mircea Matei, Ion Barnea, Gheorghe Cantacuzino, Constantin Daicoviciu, Dumitru Tudor, Kurt Horedt, Nicolae Lupu, I.I. Rusu, Zoltán Székeli, A.D. Alexandrescu, Maria Coja, Emilian Popescu etc. The pictures including drawings and plans of the researches were made in the drawing lab by: Pamfil P. Polonic, Eusebiu Mironescu, Mariana Stoicescu, Elena Becheș, Argeș Epure, Marian Ionescu, and the photos belonged to Gheorghe Dumitru and Nicolae Scarlat.
Unfortunately the evolution of the journal is under the sign of many interruptions. At first the journals were supposed to appear every year but in the end the last issue of this series appear in 1973, long distance from its predecessor, number IX from 1970.
After a break of some years is edited a new series which included in its pages the archaeological reports presented at the archaeological annual conferences from Oradea - XIII/1979; Tulcea - XIV/1980; Brașov - XV/1981 (volume issued in 1983); Vaslui - XVI/1982, 305 p. (volume issued in 1986) and Ploiești - XVII/1983, 545 p. (volume issued in 1992-1993, in two sections I, II). The editorial staff was composed by: Mircea D. Matei (responsible), Eugen Comșa, Panait I. Panait, Alexandru Suceveanu, Cornelia Stoica, Dan Gh. Teodor. The format and the presentation of the journal suffered some considerable changes. Beside the usual articles, this new series hosts anthropological studies, restoration studies of some archaeological sites, rescue archaeological reports, epigraphy, and aerial surveys, all these being accompanied by a rich illustration. For a higher accessibility abroad all the articles included summaries in foreign languages.
The third series of the journal appeared in 1999. The first issue 1/1999 had 10 articles dedicated to the research from Măgura Cuneștilor, Sărata Monteoru, Năeni-Zănoaga, Stelnica-Grădiștea Mare, Argamum and Câmpulung. But this series is also a meteoric representation in the archaeological journals from Romania because this first issue is also the last.
The tradition of publishing the results of the archaeological researches is renewed under the name of Chronicle of Archaeological Researches from Romania Series, edited by CIMEC under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The first number appeared in 1994, on paper and in digital format, and starting from 1999 the information from the volumes is accessible also on-line on the CIMEC web site www.cimec.ro
About the project of indexing MCA
Few years ago cIMeC - Institute for Cultural Memory began a project which consists in making accessible on-line the indexes of the main archaeological journals from Romania in a bibliographical database with search facilities, a useful tool for the students and specialists in the field of archaeology.
The index for the MCA journal is now complete and contains all the 768 articles appeared under this title since 1952 to 1999. The search can be performed by the name of the author, by number of the journal or by the year. We intend to add in the near future the possibility of a more refined search by epoch, locality and key words.
